MIDLAND, Texas -- University of Texas senior Roger Gubser and sophomore All-American Travis Helgeson each tallied a pair of victories Friday in the opening rounds of the Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational in Midland.

Gubser set aside Rice's Filip Zivojinovic in three sets, 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-7) before eliminating UCLA's Aaron Yovan, 6-4, 6-7, 1-0 (10-8). He will face Baylor's Michal Kokta in Saturday's quarterfinals.

Helgeson opened the tournament with a 6-2, 7-5 victory over TCU's Radu Barbu, which he followed with an easy 6-1, 6-0 win over Duke's Chris Brown. He will face TCU's Jordan Freitas in Saturday's quarterfinal.

Freshman Michael Venus scored a pair of victories but could not stave off elimination. Venus opened the tournament with a 7-6, 6-1 win over SMU's Elliott Engberg. Venus later defeated Pepperdine's Kevin Borzenski, 6-3, 6-2 but suffered a 6-4, 6-3 defeat to TCU's Rafael Abreu.
