WACO, Texas -- UT junior Hubert Chodkiewicz (Corpus Christi, Texas) and freshman Michael Venus (Orlando, Fla.) tallied a pair of doubles victories to advance to the finals of the Baylor Invitational Saturday at the Baylor Tennis Center.
Chodkiewicz and Venus improved their doubles record to 3-0 with victories over opponents from TCU and Texas-Arlington. The Longhorn duo defeated TCU's Jordan Freitas and Radu Barbu by an 8-6 count in the quarterfinals before setting aside Texas Arlington's Sandy Farquharson and Daniel Omana by an 8-1 margin in the semifinals. Chodkiewicz and Venus will take on Baylor's Lars Poerschke and Jon Reckewey in Sunday's final.
After falling in singles main-draw play on Friday, Chodkiewicz made amends with a pair of victories in consolation play. Chodkiewicz defeated Texas-San Antonio's Jonas Hoglund, 6-3, 6-2 in the round of 16 before moving on to the semifinals by way of a walkover win against Texas A&M's Matt Bain. Chodkiewicz punched his ticket to Sunday's consolation final with a 7-6 (3), 6-4 semifinal win over TCU's Freitas. He will face Baylor's Vladimir Portnov in the final.
Venus suffered his first collegiate loss in the singles quarterfinals, suffering a 6-2, 6-4 defeat to Baylor's Matt Brown.
