Men's Tennis preview: Baylor Invitational
AUSTIN, Texas -- Once delayed by the threat of Hurricane Rita, the 2005-06 Texas men's tennis season officially begins Friday when two Longhorns head to Waco for the Baylor Invitational. Play begins at 8:30 a.m. Central on Friday and continues through Sunday at the Baylor Tennis Center. Junior Hubert Chodkiewicz (Corpus Christi, Texas) enters his third season after compiling an 18-14 singles mark a season ago. He will be joined in Waco by freshman Michael Venus (Orlando, Fla.), who will make his first appearance as a Longhorn. The Horns were scheduled to open the fall season on Sept. 23 with the UT Invitational in Austin. However, the anticipated inclement weather stemming from Hurricane Rita postponed the tournament until Oct. 28-30. Four Longhorns set for ITA All-American Championships Senior Roger Gubser (Laredo, Texas) and sophomore All-American Travis Helgeson (Overland Park, Kan.) will begin play in the 64-player singles main draw on Thursday, Oct. 6. Each player will be making his first appearance in the main draw of this event. Sophomore Milan Mihailovic (Nis, Serbia) will open the tournament on Monday, Oct. 3 in the 128-player singles qualifying draw. Mihailovic may earn a main-draw berth by advancing to the round of 16 in the qualifying bracket. Gubser and sophomore Luis Diaz Barriga (Cordoba, Mexico) will join Mihailovic in the qualifying round in an attempt to play their way into the doubles main draw.
