Texas-Ex Reyes Varela helps Mexico to Davis Cup win

AUSTIN, Texas – Texas-Ex Miguel Reyes Varela (2006-09) recently helped his native Mexico to a win over Venezuela in the Davis Cup with a victory in doubles play. Reyes Varela teamed up with Bruno Rodriguez to post a 7-6 (2), 6-3, 6-2 doubles win over Venezuela’s Jose de Armas and Piero Luisi on Sept. 18, as Mexico defeated Venezuela by a 4-1 count. Mexico advances to Group I in the Americas Zone and will next compete in the spring of 2011, when it will take on Canada. Reyes Varela earned ITA All-America doubles honors as a freshman at Texas in 2006 and was selected multiple times to the NCAA All-Tournament Team. He defeated Georgia’s Christian Vitulli in UT’s 4-2 loss to the Bulldogs in the 2008 NCAA title match.
