ST. HELENA, Calif. – Texas men’s tennis opened the Audi Napa Valley Tennis Classic with four pool-play singles victories and two narrow losses in doubles on Friday at Meadowood Napa Valley Resort.
Texas and host Cal lead the singles team tally with 4-0 records after day one.
The 32-man singles field is split into eight pools featuring three collegians and a USTA junior. The winner of each pool on Sunday advances to the quarterfinals of the PlayBrave Wild Card Shootout, a single-elimination, 10-point tiebreak tournament with the winner earning a wild card into a future USTA Pro Circuit event.
Two of Texas’ four wins came against USTA junior competitors as Lloyd Glasspool topped Konrad Zieba (6-4, 6-3) and No. 46 Daniel Whitehead eased past Gage Brymer (6-1, 6-2).
The Longhorns also defeated members of Harvard’s team twice in singles. No. 42 Soren Hess-Olesen defeated 104th-ranked Denis Nguyen in two sets (6-3, 7-5), while No. 106 junior Sudanwa Sitaram defeated Alex Steinroeder (6-3, 7-5).
Later in the day Sitaram and Whitehead lost to Cal’s 23rd-ranked doubles team of Chris Konigsfeldt and Ben McLachlan by a score of 8-4. The Harvard pairing of Nguyen and Casey MacMaster needed a 10-point tiebreak to edge Glasspool and Hess-Olesen (9-8 [6]).
Day two of the Audi Napa Valley Classic begins on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. Central.
