Aug. 10, 2009 AUSTIN, Texas -- Former Longhorn Luis Diaz Barriga continues to play well on the USTA pro circuit after finishing his Texas career in 2008 as a member of the Longhorns’ NCAA runner-up squad. Diaz Barriga recently teamed up with former Ole Miss standout Robbye Poole to reach the doubles finals at a USTA futures event in Joplin, Mo. The duo won three matches in the main draw before falling to Wake Forest’s Cory Parr and Todd Paul in the finals. Diaz Barriga reached the singles quarterfinals at the Joplin event by with victories over Nick Savage-Pollock and Sean Berman before falling to former Tulsa All-American Arnau Brugues. Diaz Barriga went on to reach the singles quarterfinals last week at a USTA futures event in Godfrey, Ill. Diaz Barriga defeated Marcus Fugate in straight sets before outlasting former Texas A&M All-American Conor Pollock in three sets, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. He also reached the doubles semifinals with Juan-Manuel Elizondo. Holiner represents USA at Maccabiah Games Chen, Hilliard, Whitehead victorious on ITA Summer Circuit Chen and Hilliard teamed up to win the doubles draw at the summer circuit event in College Station after defeating Texas A&M’s Alberto Bautista and Michigan State’s Austin Brooks by an 8-4 count in the finals. Chen reached the finals in the event’s main singles draw, where he fell to Rice’s Jonathan Chang, 6-4, 6-2.
Whitehead claimed the singles and doubles titles at the ITA summer circuit event in Arlington, as he defeated Jack Hendrie in the singles final by a 6-1, 7-5 count. He teamed up with Thomas Wilson to claim the doubles title. 2009-10 schedule taking shape For a third consecutive year, Texas and Texas A&M will meet twice during the regular season. The two programs will meet in the Texas Cup, a non-conference match, on Feb. 5, 2010 in at The Downtown Club at The Met in Houston. The Horns and Aggies will meet in conference play on April 17 in Austin. |
