Venus wins USTA Boys 18 National Clay Court doubles title

AUSTIN, Texas -- University of Texas incoming freshman Michael Venus picked up a major victory this weekend as he captured the USTA Boys 18 National Clay Court doubles title in Rockville, Md. Venus earned the first gold ball of his career as he and partner Andy Orban defeated Clancy Shields and Christian Welte 6-2, 6-3 for the title.

In addition to his doubles victory, Venus has claimed the Boys 18 singles crowns at two consecutive National Open events. Venus’ first title came in May when he defeated Shields in straight sets at a tournament in El Paso, Texas. He then followed with a three-set victory over J. Houston Barrick in a contest held in Tallahassee, Fla., in early July.

Venus, ranked third nationally in Boys 18 singles, will continue his summer tournament play next month at the USTA Nationals held in Kalamazoo, Mich., on Aug. 5-14.
