Beale, Reyes Varela earn Men's Tennis doubles All-America honors
STANFORD, Calif. -- University of Texas senior Callum Beale (Adelaide, Australia) and freshman Miguel Reyes Varela (Cuernavaca, Mexico) earned doubles All-America status Friday by advancing to the doubles quarterfinals Friday at the NCAA Men's Tennis Championships at Stanford's Taube Family Tennis Center. In addition, sophomore All-American Travis Helgeson (Overland Park, Kan.) visited uncharted territory Friday when he reached the singles quarterfinals. Beale and Reyes Varela became first-time doubles All-Americans by defeating Michigan's Brian Hung and Matko Maravic by a 6-3, 7-6 (0) count in the round of 16. They advance to Saturday's quarterfinals where they will take on Illinois' third-seeded tandem of Kevin Anderson and Ryan Rowe at 5 p.m. CDT. Helgeson posted a 6-2, 6-4 round-of-16 victory over Illinois' Ryler DeHeart, to whom he suffered a narrow defeat last fall at the ITA All-American Championships. The eighth-seeded Helgeson, who became a two-time All-American by reaching the round of 16 on Thursday, will meet Mississippi's Erling Tveit in the quarterfinals. Helgeson and Tveit met in Texas' 4-1 NCAA round-of-16 win over Ole Miss on Saturday, May 20 at Stanford. Helgeson trailed Tveit, 7-5, 6-7 (8), 2-4 when their match was suspended after Texas clinched the match. Beale suffered a 6-2, 6-0 defeat to California's sixth-seeded Conor Niland in the round of 16.
