Helgeson advances to NCAA Men's Singles Second Round

COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- University of Texas freshman Travis Helgeson (Overland Park, Kan.) posted a 7-6 (2), 6-3 win against Ante Matijevic of Texas A&M in the first round of the NCAA Men's Singles Championship on Wednesday afternoon at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center on the campus of Texas A&M University. Matijevic replaced Helgeson's original first-round opponent, No. 6 seed Luben Pampoulov of UCLA, after he withdrew from the singles competition.

Helgeson, who improved to 25-12 on the year, advances to the second round to face John Isner of Georgia on Thursday, May 26 at 10 a.m. (Central). Isner recorded a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Oklahoma State's Mark Van Elden on Wednesday morning.

Also competing in the NCAA individual championship was UT junior Callum Beale (Adelaide, Australia), who fell to No. 5 seed Ludovic Walter of Duke 6-2, 6-4 in first-round action on Wednesday morning. Beale finishes his season with a 23-14 singles record.
