No. 4 Baylor knocks off No. 11 Men's Tennis in Big 12 title match
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- No. 11 Texas (18-8) picked up a victory from freshman Josh Zavala, but it wasn't enough as No. 4 Baylor (24-3) knocked off the Longhorns by a 4-1 count Sunday in the Big 12 Championship finals at the Plaza Tennis Center.
Texas opened with a doubles victory at the second position, but Baylor responded with wins at the first and third positions to capture the doubles point. UT junior Milan Mihailovic (Nis, Serbia) and sophomore Miguel Reyes Varela (Cocoyoc, Mexico) won handily over Baylor's Denes Lukacs and Dominik Mueller, as they handed the BU duo an 8-3 loss at the second slot.
At first doubles, the Texas freshman tandem of Dimitar Kutrovsky (Sofia, Bulgaria) and Josh Zavala (Amarillo, Texas) broke Baylor's serve to tie the match at six games apiece, but the Baylor tandem of Lars Poerschke and Michal Kokta broke back and held serve in the next game to take the match, 8-6. Matt Brown and David Galic defeated UT juniors Bernhard Deussner (Vienna, Austria) and Luis Diaz Barriga (Cordoba, Mexico) by an 8-5 margin at third doubles to secure the doubles point.
Baylor extended its lead to 2-0 when Matija Zgaga posted a 6-3, 6-4 win over UT's Mihailovic at fourth singles. The Bears picked up another win at sixth singles before UT's Zavala put Texas on the board with a 6-4, 6-2 win at the fifth slot over Baylor's Mueller.
Baylor put away the victory when the Bears' Michal Kokta outlasted Texas' Reyes Varela, 6-2, 7-5 at the second slot.
Texas now will await the NCAA Tournament selection announcement on Tuesday, May 1. The announcement will air live on ESPNEWS beginning at 1:30 p.m. Central.
