Four from Men's Tennis earn All-Big 12 honors

IRVING, Texas -- Texas freshman Ed Corrie was selected as the Big 12 Conference's Co-Freshman and Newcomer of the Year, as he joined freshman Kellen Damico, sophomore Dimitar Kutrovsky and senior Luis Diaz Barriga on the 2008 All-Big 12 Men's Tennis Team, the league announced Monday. Corrie, who joined Kutrovsky as a unanimous All-Big 12 singles selection, also teamed up with Damico to earn All-Big 12 doubles honors.

Corrie (Harpendon, England) becomes the third Texas player to be named the league's freshman of the year and the first to be selected as the newcomer of the year. The 47th-ranked Corrie has totaled a 28-8 singles mark to date after posting a perfect 6-0 mark in Big 12 play.

His classmate Damico (Parker, Colo.) also earned All-Big 12 singles and doubles honors. The 38th-ranked Damico holds a 27-13 overall singles record and posted a 12-8 mark in dual-match play. Corrie and Damico are ranked ninth in the latest ITA doubles rankings after posting a 14-6 mark during the season.

Kutrovsky (Sofia, Bulgaria) and Diaz Barriga (Cordoba, Mexico) earned their second consecutive selections to the All-Big 12 singles team. Kutrovsky, ranked 10th in the ITA singles rankings, totaled a 25-10 singles record and a 15-5 mark at the first singles position. By way of his top-16 national ranking, Kutrovsky likely will earn a singles All-America selection on Wednesday, April 30 when the NCAA singles and doubles selections are announced.

Diaz Barriga joined Corrie to register a perfect 6-0 mark in Big 12 play. Now a two-time All-Big 12 honoree, Diaz Barriga added a pair of victories over conference foes at the Big 12 Championship, where he defeated Texas A&M's Chris Chirico and Baylor's Gwen Corches. Diaz Barriga posted an impressive 17-2 dual-match record this season and is 39-5 in dual-match play over the last two seasons.
