Reyes Varela named Big 12 Men’s Tennis Co-Player of the Week

DALLAS -- University of Texas freshman Miguel Reyes Varela (Cuernavaca, Mexico) was selected Tuesday as the Big 12 Conference’s Men’s Tennis Co-Player of the Week after sweeping his singles and doubles matches last week against Rice, Pepperdine and Texas Tech.

Reyes Varela tallied identical 3-0 records in singles and doubles play last week and helped the Longhorns to wins over No. 2 Pepperdine and No. 42 Texas Tech.  Against Pepperdine, Reyes Varela teamed with senior Callum Beale to knock off the nation’s top-ranked doubles tandem of Scott Doerner and Andre Begemann by an 8-5 count at No. 1 doubles.  He added an easy 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles over Pepperdine’s Richard Johnson.

On April 12 against Rice, Reyes Varela tallied a 6-4, 6-3 win over the Owls’ Filip Zivojinovic at fifth singles and scored another doubles victory with Beale at the second position.  Reyes Varela and Beale added an 8-3 second-doubles win over Texas Tech’s Michael Breler and Dimitrio Martinez on April 16 before Reyes Varela outlasted Breler in a three-set singles match at the fifth slot.

Reyes Varela is enjoying a stellar initial semester at Texas.  He owns a 14-3 dual-match singles record, including a 4-1 mark in conference play.  He is winning at a 79 percent clip (singles and doubles) thus far.

Reyes Varela is the second Longhorn to earn weekly honors from the Big 12 this season.  Sophomore Travis Helgeson was honored by the conference on March 28.  Reyes Varela shares this week’s award with Texas A&M’s Matt Bain.
