Men's Tennis surges past Oklahoma, 6-1

NORMAN, Okla. -- No. 13 Texas (15-6, 3-1) dropped the doubles point but did not surrender a singles set en route to a commanding 6-1 victory over No. 32 Oklahoma (17-5, 2-3) Sunday afternoon at OU's Headington Tennis Center.

"We had a great effort from our guys today, coming off of the match on Friday (at Oklahoma State)," said UT coach Michael Center. "We lost the doubles, but this team kept showing heart and character and produced a tremendous effort today."

The Sooners jumped out to a 1-0 lead behind victories at all three doubles positions, but Texas seized immediate control of the match in singles play.

Freshman Rook Schellenberg (Dallas, Texas) put the Longhorns on the board with a convincing 6-1, 6-1 win at the fifth slot over OU's Ryan Thomas to set the tone for the remainder of the singles session.

Texas freshman Josh Zavala (Amarillo, Texas) gave the Longhorns the lead for good with a 6-4, 6-3 win at fourth singles over OU's Rob McKenzie.

Sophomore Miguel Reyes Varela (Cocoyoc, Mexico) extended UT's cushion to 3-0 when he dispatched the Sooners' Marek Velicka by a 7-6 (3), 6-3 count at second singles, and sophomore Jonah Kane-West (Free Union, Va.) clinched the match for Texas with a 6-4, 6-3 win at sixth singles over OU's Federico Chavarria.

Freshman Dimitar Kutrovsky (Sofia, Bulgaria), who upset Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's 31st-ranked Andrey Kumantsov on April 11, continued his solid play with another upset. Kutrovsky outlasted OU's 58th-ranked Vaclav Kucera, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (5),

UT junior Luis Diaz Barriga (Cordoba, Mexico) nailed down his 15th consecutive victory and improved his singles record to 21-3 with a 6-4, 7-6 (10) upset win over Oklahoma's 103rd-ranked Andrei Daescu to finish off the Sooners.

Texas awaits a date with No. 4 Baylor on Wednesday, April 18 in a match with Big 12 title ramifications. A win over the Bears, who are unbeaten in conference play, would keep Texas in the race for the Big 12 Conference regular season title.

First serve for the Texas-Baylor match is slated for 6 p.m. Central at UT's Penick-Allison Tennis Center. Admission is free.
