Zavala named Big 12 Men’s Tennis Player of the Week
IRVING, Texas -- University of Texas freshman Josh Zavala was selected Monday as the Big 12 Conference's Co-Men's Tennis Player of the Week after continuing his tremendous, season-long play last week at Texas A&M. Zavala (Amarillo, Texas) clinched Texas' 4-2 victory at Texas A&M on Friday, April 6, which marked the Longhorns' first victory in College Station in four seasons. Zavala knocked off the Aggies' Matt Bain in straight sets to clinch the team victory at fifth singles minutes before a power outage suspended play at Texas A&M's Mitchell Tennis Center. Zavala also teamed with freshman Dimitar Kutrovsky (Sofia, Bulgaria) to help UT clinch the doubles point, as the Texas duo posted an 8-3 win at first doubles over A&M's Brett Joelson and John Nallon. Zavala has won nine straight singles matches and 10 consecutive singles sets. He has not lost a singles match since Feb. 25, and he has claimed four consecutive matches at No. 1 doubles alongside Kutrovsky. Zavala holds a 13-3 dual-match singles record and a 2-0 mark in conference play. He shared the Big 12 Men's Tennis Player of the Week award with Baylor's Matija Zgaga. Zavala and the Longhorns return to action on Wednesday, April 11 against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. First serve is slated for 6 p.m. CT at UT's Penick-Allison Tennis Center.
