AUSTIN, Texas -- No. 5 Texas completed a busy weekend at its Penick-Allison Tennis Center with its third win in two days, as the Longhorns cruised past No. 60 SMU (11-5) by a 7-0 count Sunday evening. UT improves to 12-1 on the season.
Texas finished off a week's worth of perfect doubles play Sunday, as the Longhorns swept all three doubles matches for a fourth consecutive match. UT has dropped the doubles point only once this season, although it did not cost them in the match, as Texas rallied to defeat Virginia last month on the road.
Freshman Miguel Reyes Varela (Cuernavaca, Mexico) continued his stellar first semester as a Longhorn, defeating SMU's David Kuczer, 6-1, 6-1 at first singles to give Texas a 2-0 lead. Classmate Michael Venus (Orlando, Fla.) followed suit with a 6-1, 6-2 win at the sixth slot over Olvind Alver.
Sophomore Milan Mihailovic (Nis, Serbia) clinched the UT victory, defeating SMU's Henrik Soderberg by a 6-4, 6-3 count at fourth singles for his eighth consecutive victory. Sophomore Travis Helgeson (Overland Park, Kan.) topped SMU's 56th-ranked Peter Oredsson by a 7-5, 6-2 margin at the first slot for his fifth straight victory.
Senior Roger Gubser (Laredo, Texas) put away SMU's Alex Skrypko by a 7-5, 6-4 count at second singles, and senior Callum Beale (Adelaide, Australia) held off Federico Murgier, winning 6-2, 7-6 (7).
Texas begins Big 12 Conference play this Friday, March 31 as the Longhorns host Oklahoma. First serve is set for 6 p.m. CST at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center. Admission is free for all regular season home matches.
