AUSTIN, Texas -- Coming off a 6-1 victory over No. 15 Notre Dame earlier in the day, No. 5 Texas cruised through singles and doubles to a 7-0 win over Texas Southern on Saturday, March 25, at Penick Allison Tennis Center. Texas now improves to 11-1 overall with its ninth consecutive win.
The Longhorns took a 1-0 lead with solid doubles play. Sophomores Luis Diaz Barriga (Cordoba, Mexico) and Bernhard Deussner (Vienna, Austria) clinched an 8-3 victory over Texas Southern's Mateusz Wodsinski and Kurt Gattiker, while Callum Beale (Adelaide, Australia) and Miguel Reyes Varela (Cuernavaca, Mexico) clinched the doubles point with an 8-3 win
Senior Roger Gubser (Laredo, Texas) furthered the Texas lead with an easy 6-1, 6-0 victory over Texas Southern's Kurt Gattiker. Luis Diaz Barriga followed with a 6-4, 6-2 win at the No. 3 position, and Bernhard Deussner secured the victory for the Longhorns with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Texas Southern's Mateuzs Wodsinski.
Michael Venus (Orlando, Fla.) increased the lead to 5-0 by knocking off Texas Southern's Francisco Riveroll by a 6-3, 6-4 count, while Callum Beale secured a 6-4, 7-6 win at the first slot over Ivan Avila. Hubert Chodkiewicz closed out the 7-0 victory for the Longhorns with a 7-5, 7-6 win over Frank Suarez at the No. 2 position.
"I think we were really focused today," said senior Roger Gubser, who's ranked 36th by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). "The 6-1 win over Notre Dame was great for our team, and we're really happy with the way we played tonight against Texas Southern. We're looking forward to tomorrow's match against SMU and hope to see our fans come out to support us."
The No. 5 Longhorns will take on No. 60 SMU on Sunday, March 26 at UT's Penick Allison Tennis Center. First serve is set for 4 p.m., and admission is free for all Texas regular season home matches.
