No. 12 Men's Tennis upsets No. 2 Virginia, 4-3
AUSTIN, Texas -- No. 12 Texas (9-5) took the doubles point and captured three singles matches to score a 4-3 upset victory over No. 2 Virginia (14-3) Sunday evening at UT's Penick-Allison Tennis Center. "This is a great win for our guys," said UT coach Michael Center. "It took a great effort to knock off the No. 2 team in the country, a semifinalist at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships with two of the top 10 players in the country." Texas opened the doubles session with a decisive win at the third position, as sophomore Jonah Kane-West and junior Milan Mihailovic posted an 8-0 victory over Lee Singer and Marko Miklo. The Longhorns clinched the doubles point moments later when UT juniors Bernhard Deussner (Vienna, Austria) and Luis Diaz Barriga scored an 8-4 victory at second doubles over Dominic Inglot and Houston Barrick. Virginia's Devvarman put the Cavaliers on the board at first singles when he defeated Kutrovsky (Sofia, Bulgaria), 6-3, 6-4 to even the tally at one. At second singles, Mihailovic (Nis, Serbia) took the first set, 6-1, against UVA's Huey and fought him off in the second set to win, 6-4, and give Texas the lead once again. Diaz Barriga (Cordoba, Mexico) took the first set against Marko Miklo and surrendered the second before returning in the third to win, 6-3 to extend the Longhorns' lead to 3-1. Freshman Josh Zavala (Amarillo, Texas) relinquished a tough first-set tiebreaker only to cruise past UVA's Barrick in the second set, 6-1. Zavala immediately took control in the third set and tallied a 6-2 win to clinch the Longhorns' victory. Virginia's Ted Angelinos outlasted UT's Kane-West (Free Union, Va.) in a third-set supertiebreaker, and Lee Singer topped Texas freshman Rook Schellenberg (Dallas, Texas) in a third-set tiebreaker. Texas returns to the courts on Saturday, March 24 against New Mexico and Marquette at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center. No. 12 Texas 4, No. 2 Virginia 3 Singles - Order of Finish: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 5
