No. 12 Men's Tennis defeats UC-Irvine 5-2
IRVINE, Calif. -- The 12th-ranked University of Texas men's tennis team (6-3) rebounded from last week's two losses to top-five opponents with a 5-2 win over UC-Irvine on Wednesday morning at Anteater Tennis Center. The Longhorns won the doubles point and collected four straight-set victories in singles. Texas opened the match with wins at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles. Junior Roger Gubser (Laredo, Texas) and sophomore Hubert Chodkiewicz (Corpus Christi, Texas) defeated Arash Bormand and Victor Lamb at the second position, 8-1, while freshman Luis Diaz Barriga (Cordoba, Mexico) and sophomore Garrett Snyder (Newport Beach, Calif.) recorded an 8-2 victory over Peter Surapol and Mustafa Ulukan at the third spot. UC-Irvine (9-7) avoided the doubles sweep with a win at No. 1 where the 38th-ranked duo of junior Callum Beale (Adelaide, Australia) and freshman Travis Helgeson (Overland Park, Kan.) were upset by Brian Morton and Rye Kashiwabara, 9-7. In singles, the Longhorns won four of the six matches to clinch the dual. Helgeson defeated Kashiwabara, 6-3, 6-1 at the second slot to improve his record to 5-0 when playing at this position. Meanwhile, Gubser posted a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Lamm at No. 3 and Chodkiewicz handled Ulukan 6-1, 6-1 at the fifth spot. Playing in his first singles match of the season, Snyder recorded a 7-6 (6), 6-2 win over Olof Sjolund at the bottom of the lineup. The Anteaters won two matches at the first and fourth singles positions. Beale dropped his first match of the season 6-4, 6-4 to Morton at the No.1 spot and Barriga recorded a 6-4, 6-1 loss to Surapol at No. 4.
