No. 20 Pepperdine posts 5-2 win over Men's Tennis
MALIBU, Calif. -- No. 20 Pepperdine claimed a tightly-contested doubles point and four of six singles matches on its way to a 5-2 victory over No. 12 Texas Thursday afternoon at Pepperdine's Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center. UT junior Luis Diaz Barriga and freshman Josh Zavala picked up the two points for the Longhorns with victories at the fourth and fifth singles positions.
Texas (8-5) opened the doubles session with a win at the first position, as freshman Dimitar Kutrovsky (Sofia, Bulgaria) and Zavala (Amarillo, Texas) tallied an 8-4 victory over Omar Altmann and Richard Johnson. The Waves (11-6) took the next match at the second slot to set up the decisive third. UT junior Bernhard Deussner (Vienna, Austria) and Diaz Barriga (Cordoba, Mexico) took Bassam Beidas and James Lemke to a tiebreak, but the Waves prevailed to clinch the doubles point.
Pepperdine extended its lead when Bassam posted a 6-1, 6-2 win over Kutrovsky at second singles, but Diaz Barriga responded with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Pepperdine's Johnson at fourth singles to cut the lead to 2-1.
The Waves' Andre Begemann pushed the Pepperdine lead back to 3-1 with a 6-3, 7-5 win over UT sophomore Miguel Reyes Varela (Cocoyoc, Mexico) at first singles, and Pepperdine clinched the match when Mahmoud Kamel defeated Texas freshman Rook Schellenberg (Dallas, Texas), 7-5, 7-5 at the sixth position.
Pepperdine extended its cushion to 5-1 before Zavala contributed the final point for the Longhorns, outlasting Altmann in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, at fifth singles.
Texas returns home to the Penick-Allison Tennis Center on Sunday, March 18 when it takes on Virginia. First serve is set for 5 p.m. Central.
