No. 10 Men's Tennis upsets No. 2 Illinois, 4-3
AUSTIN, Texas -- No. 10 Men's Tennis clinched a crucial victory over No. 2 Illinois by a 4-3 margin in front of a large home crowd on Friday, March 10, at UT's Penick Allison Tennis Center in Austin, Texas.
Texas took the early lead with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to secure the doubles point. Senior Roger Gubser (Laredo, Texas) and junior Hubert Chodkiewicz ( Corpus Christi, Texas) opened doubles play with an 8-2 win over Pramod Dabir and Brandon Davis of Illinois, while Miguel Reyes Varela (Cuernavaca, Mexico) and Milan Mihailovic (Nis, Serbia) clinched the doubles point with an 8-6 victory.
Ryler Deheart of Illinois, ranked 3rd by the International Tennis Association (ITA), evened the score with a win at No. 2 over senior Callum Beale (Adelaide, Australia), but Milan Mihailovic (Nis, Serbia) took back the Texas lead with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Ryan Rowe at the No. 4 position. Senior Roger Gubser brought Texas to 3-2 after a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Ruben Gonzalez at the No. 3 position.
No. 15 Travis Helgeson secured the win for the Longhorns with an intense 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 victory over eighth-ranked Kevin Anderson of Illinois. "Our guys have put in a lot of work since we started the season to get to where we are, and I couldn't be more proud of them," said UT coach Michael Center, whose Longhorns entered the top 10 this week. "It's a great win for those guys and a great win for our program."
The Longhorns now hold an 8-1 record, and will resume play against UT-San Antonio on Wednesday, March 22. First serve is set for 6 p.m. at the Penick Allison Tennis Center in Austin, Texas. Admission is free for all Texas regular season home matches.
