Men's Tennis moves up to No. 8 in ITA poll

Feb. 28, 2012

AUSTIN, Texas – Texas moved up three spots into the No. 8 slot in Tuesday’s release of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) men’s college tennis team poll.  The Longhorns (10-3) cracked the top-10 in the ITA team poll for the first time this season.  Tuesday’s rankings release marks the 100th consecutive ITA team poll in which the Longhorns have been featured in the top-25.  The streak dates back to the 2006 preseason poll.

Under 12th-year head coach Michael Center, the Longhorns boast wins this season over a handful of ITA top-25 teams, including No. 12 Auburn and No. 15 Texas A&M at neutral sites. Texas also defeated No. 21 Texas Tech last month in Austin and knocked off then-No. 17 North Carolina earlier this month on the Tar Heels’ home courts.  Only four of Texas’ 10 wins have come on the Horns’ home courts in Austin.

Texas freshman Soren Hess-Olesen ranks a season-high No. 50 in the ITA singles rankings, while junior Daniel Whitehead comes in at No. 79.  Junior Chris Camillone and sophomore David Holiner rank 35th in the ITA doubles rankings.

Texas will resume dual-match play on Sunday, March 4 when it takes on TCU.  First serve is set for 2 p.m. Central at UT’s Penick-Allison Tennis Center.  The match will air tape-delayed on Longhorn Network Sunday at 6 p.m. Central.
