No. 12 Men's Tennis earns 5-2 victory over Tulsa
AUSTIN, Texas -- No. 12 Texas breezed past No. 52 Tulsa with a strong singles and doubles effort for a 5-2 victory on Sunday, Feb. 26, at UT's Penick-Allison Tennis Center, moving the Longhorns to 5-1 on the season. Despite having four consecutive home matches rescheduled due to inclement weather conditions, the men's tennis team finally got their chance to compete, and set the tone early by capturing two of the three doubles matches. Callum Beale ( Adelaide, Australia) and Travis Helgeson (Overland Park, Kansas) edged out Frederico Soriano and Lucques Maasdorp of Tulsa with an 8-6 win, while Hubert Chodkiewicz (Corpus Christi, Texas) and Miguel Reyes Varela (Cuernavaca , Mexico) clinched the doubles point with 8-5 over Tulsa's Diego Camacho and Aleksander Charpantidis. Texas continued to dominate in singles, as freshman Michael Venus (Orlando, Florida) topped Tulsa's No. 96 Andy Connelly at the No. 6 spot with an impressive 6-2, 6-2 count, and freshman Miguel Reyes Varela followed suit with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Tulsa's Diego Camacho. Tulsa answered back as Amar Bruques, ranked No. 57 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), set aside No. 15 Travis Helgeson with a 6-4, 6-1 count, and Frederico Soriano of Tulsa topped senior Roger Gubser (Laredo, Texas) at 6-1, 6-3. No. 23 Callum Beale pushed the score to 4-2 with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles over Tulsa's No. 85 Ricardo Soriano, and Milan Mihailovic (Nis, Serbia) wrapped up the victory for the Longhorns by defeating Will Gray of Tulsa in a 7-5, 6-4 count.
