No. 9 Notre Dame drops No. 18 Men's Tennis, 4-1
CHICAGO -- No. 18 Texas (4-3) picked up a singles victory from freshman Dimitar Kutrovsky, but it wasn't enough as No. 9 Notre Dame dealt the Longhorns a 4-1 defeat Sunday at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships at the Midtown Tennis Club. Texas ends its stint at the National Indoors at 1-2 after defeating Boise State and falling to Virginia.
"This was another really good effort from our guys, but we just didn't execute today against an experienced Notre Dame team," said UT coach Michael Center. "We learned a lot this weekend, and this team will keep getting better."
Texas picked up an 8-6 doubles victory from freshmen Josh Zavala (Amarillo, Texas) and Dimitar Kutrovsky (Sofia, Bulgaria) at the first position over Ryan Keckley and Sheeva Parbhu, but the Irish took the remaining two positions to clinch the doubles point.
Notre Dame took a 2-0 lead before Texas got on the board when Kutrovsky posted a 6-2, 6-4 victory at third singles over Brett Helgeson. The Fighting Irish finished off the match with wins at the first and fifth singles positions to preserve the 4-1 victory.
Texas returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 24 when it hosts Georgia Tech in its home opener at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center. First serve is set for 1 p.m. Central.
