UT Golf Club Names Former NCAA Champion Steve Bryan as Director of Tennis
Feb. 14, 2012
AUSTIN, Texas - Construction is under way at the Edgar O. and Melanie A. Weller Tennis Center at the University of Texas Golf Club, and excitement continues to build for the facility with the naming of Steve Bryan as its new Director of Tennis. Bryan is a two-time All-American who played for The University of Texas from 1988-1990 where he won the NCAA singles national championship as a sophomore. Following his success at UT, Bryan went on to compete professionally on the ATP Tour for nearly a decade. Bryan will join the UT Tennis Center in September prior to the facility's opening this fall. His responsibilities will include supervising all tennis staffing and programming and he is charged with developing a first-class program for club members to include women's team tennis; league play; couples, juniors and men's programs; and summer camps specializing in junior development. "When reviewing candidates, we looked for the very best. We wanted the Texas connection and a proven leader in the world of tennis," said UT Golf Club General Manager and COO Steve Termeer. "This facility is arguably going to be one of the finest in Texas, and possibly in the nation, and it is only fitting to have it operated under superb leadership. Steve Bryan was my first choice and we are thrilled to have him on our team." The $8 million facility will feature six indoor tennis courts and four outdoor tennis courts. It will also serve as the indoor home for The University of Texas men's and women's tennis programs, making Bryan's strong ties to Texas Tennis a significant asset in his role as director.
"This is a great hire. Steve Bryan is not only one of the greatest players ever to play at Texas, but he is recognized in the tennis community as a leader and simply one of the best," said Michael Center, head coach of the UT men's tennis team. "We could not have chosen a better person to lead our new indoor tennis facility. I couldn't be more excited about what the future holds."
The future holds great things for UT Golf Club members and prospective members that join the UT Tennis Center. The facility, located between the 1st and 9th fairways of the UT Golf Club, will be championship caliber and include all of the well-appointed details members have come to enjoy at the UT Golf Club. With a limited number of memberships available, members will have easy access to quality court time along with member privileges such as fitness, swimming (opening Spring 2013), dining and social events. "Joining this team is a once in a lifetime experience. The idea of being part of a world-class facility proudly bearing the UT name and being here at the beginning is an opportunity anyone in the tennis world would embrace," Bryan said. "I'll work hard every day to build a program our members will truly enjoy. And we'll make this a facility that Longhorn fans everywhere will be proud of when they see Texas Tennis compete and win on our courts."
