No. 20 Men's Tennis upsets No. 6 Virginia, 4-3

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- No. 20 Texas (3-1) rebounded from a doubles sweep to capture four of singles matches and upset sixth-ranked Virginia (7-3) by a 4-3 margin Sunday at UVA's Boar's Head Sports Club. The Longhorns knocked off the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) preseason No. 1 team, who had slipped to No. 6 after suffering losses at Pepperdine and Illinois. The loss is Virginia's first at its new indoor facility at the Boar's Head Sports Club.

Texas attacked the Cavaliers after dropping the doubles point. Senior Callum Beale (Adelaide, Australia) evened the tally at one with a convincing 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 2 over UVA's 10th-ranked Somdev Devvarman. After the Cavaliers' sixth-ranked Treat Huey gave Virginia the lead once more with a straight-set win at fourth singles, the Longhorns took over, winning three of the remaining four matches.

At first singles, sophomore Travis Helgeson (Overland Park, Kan.) knocked off Doug Stewart, who once was ranked in the ITA top 10, by a 7-5, 6-3 margin to even the score at two points apiece. Sophomore Milan Mihailovic (Nis, Serbia) put the Longhorns on top for good by upsetting UVA's 46th-ranked Marko Miklo, 6-1, 1-6, 6-1.

Senior Roger Gubser (Laredo, Texas), ranked No. 34 by the ITA, closed out the match by topping the Cavaliers' 53rd-ranked Rylan Rizza in two tiebreak sets. Virginia's Jarrett Chirico tallied the final UVA point with a 7-5, 7-5 win over UT freshman Michael Venus (Orlando, Fla.).

"We weren't satisfied with the way we played on Friday at Duke, and we knew we had another challenge in front of us today," said UT coach Michael Center, who picked up his first career victory over the Cavaliers. "The guys came out and played with a lot of emotion and energy. They kept fighting and competed in the way I knew we were capable of playing."

Texas begins a 12-match home stand on Wednesday, Feb. 15 against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. First serve is set for 5:30 p.m. CST at UT's Penick-Allison Tennis Center. Admission is free for all UT regular-season home matches.
