Mister Roger's Neighborhood: February 8
After redshirting the 2004 season, junior Roger Gubser has returned to the Texas lineup and become one of the leaders of a squad that features seven newcomers. Throughout the season, Gubser will write a journal that keeps fans up-to-date on the team, both on and off the court, the progression of the season and certainly a variety of other topics. Check back regularly to see what's been going on with Gubser and the rest of the Texas men's tennis team. Hello Texas fans, We are back in Longhornland and this past weekend was super duper. We split our matches, beating No. 25 Notre Dame and losing to No. 5 Illinois. The Notre Dame match was just the kind of match our team needed. We fought back from a 3-1 deficit to win the match, 4-3. I am certain that our inexperienced players captured the attitude, fight and "unwillingness to yield" necessary for any tough college match. It was a total team effort that finished with a gutsy performance from Callum Beale. The Illinois match was also a great test for our team. Although we lost 5-2, we left knowing that we can and will beat top-five teams. Our trip was filled with many good memories including a few snowball fights. (Callum and Luis had never seen snow before!) Even though our trip involved many hours in the car, the team had a really good time. We play again Sunday, Feb. 13 in Tulsa, Okla. We will then return to Austin and open with our first home match against Minnesota on Saturday, Feb. 26. We are expecting a very special guest in the stands that afternoon! Well, I hope you have enjoyed this entry and I want to leave you with a conversation I had with Callum Beale. Mr. Rogers: So what inspired you to keep fighting (in your match that clinched the victory against Notre Dame)? Callum: Oy mate, I just kept telling myself that if "The Wiggles" (an Australian children's show) were here, they would most definitely win the match. Mr. Rogers: You must be as big a fan of the "The Wiggles" as you are of "Mr. Roger's Neighborhood." Callum: Certainly … and I was also craving heaps of veggie-mate (weird Australian spread), so I had to get off the court quickly. Mr. Rogers: As the host of Mr. Roger's Neighborhood I would like you to share a few extra words with our fans. Callum: Well mates, our match was a beauty and Aussie Rules Football RULES! Until next time,
