Mister Roger's Neighborhood: February 1
After redshirting the 2004 season, junior Roger Gubser has returned to the Texas lineup and become one of the leaders of a squad that features seven newcomers. Throughout the season, Gubser will write a journal that keeps fans up-to-date on the team, both on and off the court, the progression of the season and certainly a variety of other topics. Check back regularly to see what's been going on with Gubser and the rest of the Texas men's tennis team. Hello again, Well, we came back to Austin Saturday night with a win! It was quite a sweet victory. Our young team showed tremendous determination by overcoming our doubles loss to win five-of-six singles matches. I was anxious to see how our relatively inexperienced team would respond to the pressures of finally playing a dual match, and I must say, I was quite impressed with our attitude and effort. Since I have been at UT, I cannot recall a moment when our team lost the doubles point and then recorded five straight singles victories. We are now gearing up for this weekend. We are planning a little field trip to Indiana (Notre Dame) and Illinois (U of Illinois), so we will be out of the "neighborhood" for a few days. I do not expect us to return without similar results from last weekend. I hope the weather in Austin is nicer by the time we get back, because I personally cannot stand this cold weather. I also cannot believe that the second best Roger (Federer) lost at the Australian Open. Maybe next week's episode will include an analytical excerpt on "how not to lose a 5-2 lead in the fourth set tie-breaker being up 2 sets to 1." I will e-mail Rog and tell him to tune in next week. Well, it's "adios" from here and "Hook 'em Horns." Roger
