MINNEAPOLIS -- No. 22 Texas took an early lead after claiming the doubles point and collected four straight-set singles wins to defeat No. 54 Minnesota by a 5-2 margin Saturday evening at the Baseline Tennis Center. The Longhorns improve to 6-0 in season openers under coach Michael Center.
UT sophomore Travis Helgeson (Overland Park, Kan.) and freshman Michael Venus (Orlando, Fla.) opened doubles play by defeating Raoul Schwark and Adrien Debrevne by an 8-5 count at the No. 2 position. Junior Hubert Chodkiewicz (Corpus Christi, Texas) and freshman Miguel Reyes Varela (Cuernavaca, Mexico) clinched the doubles point with an 8-6 win at No. 3 over Mikey Kantar and Sion Wilkins.
Texas added to its cushion when sophomore Milan Mihailovic (Nis, Serbia) turned away Debrevne, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4 singles. Reyes Varela picked up his first career dual-match victory when he defeated Brian Lipinski by a 6-3, 6-4 count, giving Texas a commanding 3-0 lead. Senior Roger Gubser (Laredo, Texas) clinched the match at the third singles position with a 6-1, 7-6 win over Andres Osorio.
Helgeson rounded out the Longhorns' scoring by defeating D.J. Geatz, 6-4, 6-4, at the first singles slot.
"We played hard and competed really well tonight against a very solid Minnesota team," Center said. "I'm proud of the effort tonight, because it's not easy to win at Minnesota. This is a good start."
