Chodkiewicz and Helgeson advance to doubles semifinals at Rice Invitational
HOUSTON -- The University of Texas men's tennis team wrapped up the second day of competition at the Seventh Annual Met/Rice Indoor Invitational at the Downtown Club at the Met on Saturday, Jan. 22, with the tandem of sophomore Hubert Chodkiewicz (Corpus Christi, Texas) and freshman Travis Helgeson (Overland Park, Kan.) advancing to the semifinals of flight A doubles. Chodkiewicz and Helgeson used an 8-6 victory over Raul Rivas and Oscar Roman of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to move into Sunday's semifinals where they will face Ohio State's Devin Mullings and Dominic Ozanne. Also competing in flight A doubles on Saturday were juniors Roger Gubser (Laredo, Texas) and Callum Beale (Adelaide, Australia). The tandem lost a hard-fought 9-7 decision to fourth-seeded Ben Harknett and Robert Searle of Baylor. After a first-round loss, the duo of freshman Luis Diaz Barriga (Cordoba, Mexico) and sophomore Garrett Snyder (Newport Beach, Calif.) were sent to the back draw of flight A doubles where they faced third-seeded Ricardo Almeida and Dennis Andrade of UT-San Antonio. A withdrawal by UT-San Antonio in the first round, followed by a second-round bye, finds Diaz Barriga and Snyder in the semifinals of the consolation bracket on Sunday where they will square off against Nebraska's Joel Reckaway and Adrian Szatmary. In flight B doubles, top-seeded Bernhard Deussner (Vienna, Austria) and Milan Mihailovic (Nis, Serbia) received a first-round bye, then faced Rice's Rodrigo Gabriel and Hooney Shin in the quarterfinals. A 9-8 loss sent the freshmen duo to the back draw where they later posted an 8-1 victory over Karl Jones and Marcus Karner of Nebraska. The win advanced Deussner and Mihailovic to the consolation semifinals where they will face Javier Herrera and Marcus Lunt of Tyler Junior College. Saturday's singles competition saw several Longhorns fall in quarterfinal action. Gubser, seeded sixth in flight A singles, was defeated by fourth-seeded Mullings, 6-2, 6-2, and Helgeson, seeded eighth, fell to top-seeded Benedikt Dorsch of Baylor, 6-3, 6-2. Additionally, Chodkiewicz was defeated, 6-3, 6-0, by third-seeded Searle. Joey Atas of Ohio State, seeded seventh, needed a tiebreaker to defeat Mihailovic in the consolation of flight A singles, 7-6, 6-7, 10-4. In flight B singles quarterfinal action, top-seeded Diaz Barriga was upset by fifth-seeded Marcus Sundh of Kentucky, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1, and Snyder fell in three sets to fourth-seeded Shin, 4-6, 6-0, 6-1. The final day of competition at the Met/Rice Indoor Invitational is scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 23, with doubles beginning at 10 a.m. (Central).
