Tennis to welcome fans free of charge in 2006

AUSTIN, Texas -- Beginning with the Saturday, Jan. 28 women’s tennis match against Northwestern, The University of Texas Athletics Department will offer free admission to all fans attending Longhorns men’s and women’s tennis matches at UT’s Penick-Allison Tennis Center this season.

Fans will no longer need to purchase tickets for Texas men’s and women’s tennis regular season dual matches, although the NCAA requires paid admission for any on-campus postseason events it sanctions, such as the NCAA Regional Championships in May.

“In the past, we have allowed fans to attend UT swimming and track and field events at no cost,” said Lynn Wheeler, UT associate athletics director for sports programs. “Opening the doors to the Penick-Allison Tennis Center with free admission goes in line with what we have done with other Longhorn sports.”

The third-ranked Texas women are slated for 11 home matches this season, including the aforementioned date with No. 6 Northwestern and a battle set for Wednesday, April 19 against ninth-ranked Baylor.

The 22nd-ranked UT men will play 13 matches at Penick-Allison in 2006, including 12 consecutive home matches from Feb. 15 through April 2. Texas will play host to top-15 foes Pepperdine (Friday, Feb. 24), Illinois (Friday, March 10) and Texas A&M (Sunday, April 23).
