Men's Tennis breezes past Michigan to conclude Hurricane Invitational

CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- No. 22 Texas wrapped up a brilliant three-day stretch of competition Monday, as No. 48 Michigan proved to be no match for the Longhorns in a mock dual match on the final day of the Hurricane Invitational at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center. UT captured three of four doubles matches and seven of eight singles contests against the Wolverines to end the Hurricane Invitational with an 18-6 singles record and an 8-3 mark in doubles play.

Senior Callum Beale (Adelaide, Australia) and freshman Miguel Reyes Varela (Cuernavaca, Mexico) wasted little time in dispatching Andrew Mazlin and Ryan Heller by an 8-1 count. Junior Hubert Chodkiewicz (Corpus Christi, Texas) and senior Roger Gubser (Laredo, Texas) cruised past Steve Peretz and Peter Aarts by an 8-2 margin, and sophomores Luis Diaz Barriga (Cordoba, Mexico) and Bernhard Deussner (Vienna, Austria) scored an 8-3 win over Michigan's Scott Bruckmann and Mike DePietro.

Texas continued its strong play in the eight ensuing singles matches. Helgeson scored his second victory in as many days, defeating Matko Maravic, 6-4, 6-1. Beale followed suit with a 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 win over Brian Hung to record a perfect 3-0 singles mark in the tournament. Gubser collected his second win in as many days, defeating Mazlin by a 6-3, 7-5 count.

The freshman Reyes Varela, playing his first semester of tennis at UT, defeated Ryan Heller, 6-4, 6-3, for his second tournament win. Chodkiewicz added his second consecutive victory by edging Peretz in three sets. Sophomore Milan Mihailovic (Nis, Serbia) set aside Michigan's Aarts, 6-3, 6-1 before UT's Deussner earned the last Longhorn victory by defeating Bruckmann, 6-2, 6-3.

"This was a great way to kick off the season and get a feel for where we are right now," said UT coach Michael Center. "We had a really successful weekend, and we are eager to get the season started."

Texas heads to the Rice Invitational in Houston on Friday, Jan. 20 and will begin regular-season play on Saturday, Jan. 28 at Minnesota.
