CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- The 22nd-ranked University of Texas men's tennis squad utilized a solid, all-around singles and doubles effort Sunday to overpower eighth-ranked Duke Sunday on day two of the Hurricane Invitational at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
Texas set the tone early by capturing three of four doubles matches. Sophomore Travis Helgeson (Overland Park, Kan.) and freshman Michael Venus (Orlando, Fla.) edged Duke's Joey Atas and Ludovic Walter in a tiebreaker, 9-8. Senior Roger Gubser (Laredo, Texas) and junior Hubert Chodkiewicz (Corpus Christi, Texas) posted an 8-6 win over Jonathan Stokke and Alex Stone before sophomores Milan Mihailovic (Nis, Serbia) and Bernhard Deussner (Vienna, Austria) defeated Kiril Dimitrov and Christopher Brown by the same count.
Helgeson bounced back from a day one singles loss to defeat the ninth-ranked Walter, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. Senior Callum Beale (Adelaide, Australia) claimed his second consecutive singles match, upsetting 20th-ranked Jonathan Stokke, 6-3, 7-5. Gubser continued the Longhorns' momentum, defeating Atas by a 7-5, 6-4 count.
The freshman Venus set aside the Blue Devils' Ned Samuelson in straight sets, and Chodkiewicz closed out Alex Stone by a 6-2, 6-2 margin.
Texas will wrap up play in the Hurricane Invitational when it takes on Michigan in the two teams' third mock-dual match in as many days. The action begins at 9 a.m. CST at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
