CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- No. 22 Texas opened day one of the Hurricane Invitational at the University of Miami with a solid performance against the host Hurricanes at UM's Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
Playing in a mock dual-match format, the Longhorns scored two doubles victories and collected four of six singles matches to wrap up day one. In doubles play, Texas seniors Callum Beale (Adelaide, Australia) and Roger Gubser (Laredo, Texas) defeated Miami's Vivek Subramanian and Luigi D'Agord by an 8-5 count. UT sophomore Travis Helgeson (Overland Park, Kan.) and freshman Michael Venus (Orlando, Fla.) dispatched Miami's Tim Krebs and Daniel Vallverdu by an 8-6 margin.
Texas turned in a qualify performance in singles play following doubles action. Playing his first singles match of the season, Beale defeated Vallverdu by a commanding 6-2, 6-2 count. Playing his first match as a Longhorn, freshman Miguel Reyes Varela (Cuernavaca, Mexico) defeated John Hoyes, 6-4, 6-2.
Sophomore Milan Mihailovic (Nis, Serbia) rallied from a one-set deficit to knock off Krebs by a 1-6, 6-2, 6-1 count, and Venus came from behind for a 5-7, 6-1, 6-4 victory over Eric Hechtman.
Texas returns to action Sunday to meet Duke in a similar mock dual match. The match is set for 1 p.m. CST at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
