Men's Tennis preview: Key Biscayne Invitational

WHAT:  No. 19 Texas opens 2012 at the Key Biscayne Invitational, an individual singles and doubles event featuring teams from Michigan, LSU, Virginia and Denver. 

WHEN:  Friday, Jan. 6 through Sunday, Jan. 8

WHERE:  Tennis Center at Crandon Park – Key Biscayne, Fla.

LAST YEAR AT THE KEY BISCAYNE INVITATIONAL:  Texas collectively totaled a 23-3 singles record against Michigan, Denver and LSU at the 2011 Key Biscayne Invitational.

ITA RANKINGS UPDATE: Texas held the 19th slot in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) preseason team rankings released Tuesday.  Junior Daniel Whitehead ranks 112th in the preseason singles rankings, while junior Chris Camillone and sophomore David Holiner rank 48th in the preseason doubles rankings.        

THE 2011-12 LONGHORNS:  Texas returns six letterwinners from the 2010-11 squad that reached the round of 32 at the NCAA Championships and the semifinals of the Big 12 Championships.
Junior Daniel Whitehead totaled a 12-2 fall singles record and capped the fall by winning the Southwest Shootout, where he defeated teammate Soren Hess-Olesen in the finals.  Junior Ben Chen returns after posting a 6-5 fall singles record, and sophomore David Holiner tallied an 8-3 fall singles record. 


 

 

Sophomore Sudanwa Sitaram registered a 9-6 fall singles record, and junior Chris Camillone notched a 6-5 fall singles record. 

Freshmen Soren Hess-Olesen posted a 10-4 fall singles record while reaching the singles finals at a pair of fall events, the Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational and the Southwest Shootout.  Freshman Jacoby Lewis won four fall singles matches and won the consolation draw at the Southwest Shootout.   

Newcomers Lloyd Glasspool and Joey Swaysland are set to join the Longhorns’ men’s tennis program this weekend, as well.
