Chen, Whitehead claim doubles title at Texas Invitational

Nov. 7, 2010

AUSTIN, Texas -- Texas sophomores Ben Chen and Daniel Whitehead eliminated a Texas A&M tandem in the semifinals before defeating teammates Kellen Damico and David Holiner in the doubles finals to take the doubles championship Sunday at the Texas Invitational.

Chen and Whitehead opened play Sunday morning with an 8-4 win over Texas A&M's Alexis Klegou and Austin Klores to advance to the finals against Damico and Holiner, who posted an 8-4 win over the Aggies' Alberto Bautista and Colin Hoover.  Chen and Whitehead edged Damico and Holiner by an 8-6 count in the finals.

"Ben and Daniel played really, really well this week, especially today," UT assistant coach Ricardo Rubio said.  "They were putting on an exhibition with their returns and their volleys, and they earned their wins today."

Florida's third-seeded Bob Van Overbeek won in straight sets over Oklahoma's Peerakit Siributwong to win the main singles draw.  Texas sophomore Alex Hilliard fell in a third-set match tiebreak to Texas A&M's Austin Klores in the consolation final of the "B" singles draw.
