AUSITN, Texas – The University of Texas men’s tennis team began the eight-team 2012 UT Invitational with a 5-2 record in the main doubles draw and a combined 11-9 record in the singles A and B draws on Friday at Penick-Allison Tennis Center.
“We are really fortunate to have this level of competition come to town and help wrap-up our fall season,” head coach Michael Center said. “We have improved a lot this fall. We lost some tough matches today – Oklahoma edged us in some three-set matches. We will get another chance tomorrow. Overall, I’m pleased with where we are.”
Texas and Oklahoma met seven times in doubles and singles competition on Friday. Four of the six singles matches against the Sooners went to three sets. The conference rivals will pick up right where they left with an all-Longhorns/Sooners quarterfinal of the singles A Draw on Saturday.
Texas’ No. 99 David Holiner will face No. 6 Costin Paval and No. 42 Soren Hess-Olesen plays No. 57 Dane Webb. In the quarterfinal of the singles B Draw, UT is represented by senior Ben Chen who will also face a Sooner tomorrow – Nick Papac.
Three teams will represent the Longhorns in the doubles quarterfinal – Alex Hilliard / Andrew Korinek, Lloyd Glasspool / Joey Swaysland and Soren Hess-Olesen / David Holiner. Hess-Olesen and Holiner played for the first time in over a year as Hess-Olesen played in the stead of ill Chris Camillone.
“The thing about playing a tournament like this – you have to play a lot of sets,” Center said. “You can’t really have lapses. We were a little up-and-down at times. I thought our level was really good but we lost our discipline and at the end of the day it caught up to us because we were on the court for so long.”
Match play continues at 8:30 a.m. Central on Saturday at Penick-Allison Tennis Complex.
