Men's Tennis advances to singles semifinals at Texas Invitational
Nov. 1, 2008 AUSTIN, Texas -- Texas advanced three in singles and three doubles pairs to their respective main draw semifinals Saturday at the Texas Invitational at UT’s Penick-Allison Tennis Center. Top-seeded junior Dimitar Kutrovsky opened with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Oregon’s Alex Cornelissen in the round of 16 before edging classmate Josh Zavala in the quarterfinals, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6. Kutrovsky will meet UT-Pan American’s Ashwin Vijayaragavan in Sunday’s semifinals. Zavala had defeated Lamar’s Maciej Bogusz in straight sets to reach the quarterfinals. Senior Miguel Reyes Varela dealt UT-Arlington’s Brieuc Hamon a 6-3, 6-0 defeat in the round of 16 before eliminating Denver’s David Simson in the quarterfinals, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2. Reyes Varela will take on his teammate, sophomore Ed Corrie, in the semifinals. Corrie defeated UT-Pan American’s Nirvick Mohinta, 6-1, 6-1, before knocking out Denver’s Yannick Weihs, 6-2, 6-4. Corrie and Reyes Varela will take on UT sophomore Kellen Damico and junior Jon Wiegand in Sunday’s doubles quarterfinals. Kutrovsky and Zavala also earned a spot in Sunday’s doubles semifinals.
