Oct. 23, 2011
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas junior Chris Camillone and sophomore David Holiner defeated teammates Ben Chen and Daniel Whitehead to win the 32-team doubles draw Sunday at the ITA Texas Regional Championships, an event featuring all of the NCAA Division I schools in Texas. Camillone and Holiner posted a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Chen and Whitehead to win the doubles title and earn an automatic berth into next month’s ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championship in New York City. Camillone and Holiner give UT its second consecutive doubles titlists at the ITA Texas Regional Championships. Texas-Exes Ed Corrie and Jean Andersen claimed the ITA Texas Regional doubles crown last season. “It was exciting to get two teams in the finals,” UT head coach Michael Center said. “Both of those doubles teams played well to get to that point, and they had some tight wins against very good teams to get to the finals. It was a great event for both of our doubles teams in the final.” Camillone and Holiner posted an 8-5 win over Texas A&M’s Alexis Klegou and Junior Ore in the semifinals, and Chen and Whitehead defeated Texas A&M’s Alberto Bautista and Jackson Withrow by a 9-8 count to earn their finals berth. “We definitely got better after (the ITA All-American Championships in) Tulsa,” Center added. The guys are playing really hard and getting better. It’s exciting to be sending a couple of our guys to New York next month. The ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championship is always a fun tournament.”
In addition to the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships beginning Nov. 4, Texas will send six players to the TCU Invitational the same weekend. ITA Texas Regional Championships |
