FORT WORTH, Texas - Senior Daniel Whitehead defeated teammate Sudanwa Sitaram in the singles draw semifinals of the USTA/ITA Texas Regional on Monday at TCU's Friedman Tennis Center.
Before facing off in the semifinals, both Whitehead and Sitaram won a quarterfinal match earlier in the day on Monday - Whitehead eliminating Baylor's Marko Krickovic and Sitaram knocking off Texas A&M's Jordan Szabo.
"I thought that Daniel played a really good match this morning and Sudanwa finished his match very strongly - some of the best tennis I've seen him play," head coach Michael Center said. "In the semifinals they played okay against each other despite being a little awkward when you're facing your teammate."
Whitehead took both sets in the match against his teammate, 6-3 and 7-6.
Whitehead will face Baylor's Julian Lenz in Tuesday's final of the singles draw, which started with 71 players on Saturday. The winner advances to the USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Championships, which are Nov. 8-10 at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
"It will be a good test for Daniel tomorrow with a trip to New York on the line while facing a very good opponent," Center said. "This regional tournament takes a lot out of you. It's a lot of tennis in a short amount of time."
Ed Corrie was the last player from UT to win a singles title at the USTA/ITA Texas Regionals in 2009.
In doubles action on Monday, top-seeded Chris Camillone and David Holiner lost to Texas A&M's third-seeded doubles team in the semifinals. Camillone and Holiner finished their run with a 4-1 record, improving their fall season record to 7-2.
