Damico, Diaz Barriga advance to quarterfinals at ITA South Central Regional
AUSTIN, Texas -- Texas freshman Kellen Damico and senior Luis Diaz Barriga collected a pair of singles victories and also tallied a doubles victory together to move on to the singles and doubles quarterfinals Sunday at the ITA South Central Regional Championship. Damico (Parker, Colo.) opened the day with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Rice's Filip Zivojinovic before outlasting Baylor's Dominik Mueller in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. Damico will meet Rice's Christoph Muller in the quarterfinals on Monday at 8:30 a.m. Diaz Barriga (Cordoba, Mexico) opened with a 6-0, 6-1 win over his teammate, UT sophomore Josh Zavala (Amarillo, Texas), before setting aside TCU's Zach Nichols, 6-4, 7-5. Diaz Barriga will take on SMU's Robin Fahgen in the Monday morning quarterfinals. Damico and Diaz Barriga also punched their ticket to the doubles quarterfinals by handily defeating Texas A&M's Kayvon Karimi and Jerry Makowski, 8-2. The duo will meet Texas A&M's Chris Chirico and Conor Pollock on Monday at 1:30 p.m. Sophomore Jon Wiegand (San Antonio, Texas) scored the biggest singles victory of his collegiate career, defeating Texas A&M's 34th-ranked Jerry Makowski in the singles consolation round, 7-6, 5-7, 1-0 (10-7). Wiegand advances to meet Texas A&M's Karimi in Monday's singles consolation round of 16. ITA South Central Regional Championship
