Oct. 3, 2011
TULSA, Okla. – Texas sophomore David Holiner and junior Daniel Whitehead won their opening matches of the qualifying singles draw Monday on day three of the ITA All-American Championships, one of three national championship events on the college tennis calendar. Holiner (Dallas, Texas) defeated New Mexico’s Ben Dunbar by a 6-3, 6-3 count and will take on either Drake’s Anis Ghorbel or Florida’s Spencer Newman in Tuesday’s round-of-64 match. Two singles wins would propel Holiner into the main singles draw, which begins play on Thursday. Whitehead (Sugar Land, Texas) posted a 6-1, 6-4 win over Grant Ive from tournament host Tulsa. Whitehead, who also can reach the main singles draw with two more wins, will take on either East Tennessee State’s Sander Gille or Drake’s James McKie on Tuesday. Juniors Ben Chen and Alex Hilliard dropped their opening-round qualifying matches and will play one consolation match each on Tuesday. The Horns will begin play in the qualifying doubles draw on Tuesday. ITA All-American Championships
