Oct. 3, 2010
HOUSTON -- Texas sophomore Daniel Whitehead claimed one of three flight titles for the Longhorns by winning the "A" singles flight on the final day of the Rice Fall Classic at the Owls' Jake Hess Tennis Stadium.
Whitehead easily won the `A" singles draw with a commanding 6-1, 6-1 victory over LSU's Stefan Szacinski.
"Daniel played very, very well," UT head coach Michael Center said. "He had a great summer, and that has carried over into the fall. He has been more aggressive, and all the hard work is paying off. Every part of his game has gotten better, and I'm really pleased."
Freshman Sudanwa Sitaram won the third-place match in the "A" draw by posting a 7-5, 5-7, 6-1 win over UT-Arlington's Mindaugas Celedinas.
"Sudanwa is still getting his body into shape," Center said. "But, he is a heck of a player, and it will be just a matter of time before he puts it all together."
Sophomore Ben Chen claimed the "B" singles flight with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Rice's Harry Fowler.
"Ben played well this weekend," Center said. "He played the big points really well. Like Daniel, he is stronger and more aggressive. Those guys had great weekends."
Redshirt freshman David Holiner won the "B" singles consolation draw with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Laurent Montoisy.
Texas sophomore Vasko Mladenov defeated New Mexico's Jadon Phillips in the pre-qualifying draw at the ITA All-American Championships but was eliminated by Purdue's Krisztian Krocsko in his next match. UT junior Jean Andersen will play in the event's qualifying singles round on Monday.
