ST. HELENA, Calif. - Texas men's tennis featured two players in the PlayBrave Shootout Quarterfinals during the final day of the Audi Napa Valley Tennis Classic at the Meadowood Napa Valley Resort on Sunday.
Sophomore Soren Hess-Olesen advanced to the final round of the event before losing in extended play to Georgia's Nathan Pasha. Sophomore Lloyd Glasspool went undefeated (3-0) in pool play, before losing the eventual champion, Pasha, in the quarterfinals.
"It was a terrific week for the entire group," head coach Michael Center said. "We went 8-4 against excellent competition. Soren [Hess-Olesen] and Lloyd [Glasspool] both reaching the final shootout was a result of some terrific play all weekend. Soren came up just short in the final but is really improving his game. Overall, we should leave Napa feeling very good."
Before playing in the finals, No. 42 Hess-Olesen defeated No. 16 Ben McLachlan of Cal in straight sets (6-4, 6-3) to advance out of pool play into the quarterfinals.
In the quarterfinals, Hess-Olesen ousted McLachlan's brother, Riki, of Cal and Ben Wagland of Georgia to setup the final round against the 123rd-ranked Pasha.
Playing in 10-point tiebreak format, Hess-Olesen survived four match points against Pasha to extend the match to an eventual 16-14 final score. With the win in the unique USTA Player Development/collegiate event, Pasha will be awarded a USTA Pro Circuit wild card to a future event.
Glasspool joined his teammate in the quarterfinals by rolling through pool play with a 3-0 record. The England native capped off his undefeated pool play after handling Daneil Ho of Stanford in straight sets (6-0, 6-2).
Texas returns to action next weekend as the nine-day ITA All-American Championships begins on Saturday, Sept. 29 from Tulsa, Okla.
