OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. -- Texas collected three doubles wins and three singles victories on the opening day of competition Friday at the Olympia Fields Invitational, a three-day event featuring UT, host Illinois and Florida State.
Sophomore Kellen Damico and junior Jon Wiegand picked up two wins to lead the Longhorns in the doubles session. The duo knocked off Illinois' Connor Roth and Roy Kalmanovich by an 8-3 count before dealing Florida State's Clint Bowles and Chris Cloer an 8-4 defeat. Juniors Josh Zavala and Rook Schellenberg tallied the final doubles win by an 8-4 count over Illinois' Waylon Chin and Connor Roth.
Damico went on to post a lengthy 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 win over Illinois' Billy Heiser, and junior transfer Olivier Sajous, playing his first singles match as a Longhorn, posted an impressive 6-2, 6-3 win over Florida State's Maciek Sykut.
Senior Miguel Reyes Varela dispatched Illinois' Ruan Roelosfe in straight sets, 6-2, 7-6 (0), and Zavala tacked on a 6-4, 2-6, 7-5 win over Florida State's Andrew Bailey.
Texas continues play in the Olympia Fields Invitational on Saturday.
