Sept. 18, 2011
OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. - Texas junior Daniel Whitehead defeated Texas Tech's Raphael Pfister before knocking off teammate Soren Hess-Olesen in the singles final to capture the Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational title Sunday afternoon. Whitehead (Sugar Land, Texas) defeated Tech's Pfister by a 6-2, 6-1 count, and Hess-Olesen defeated Tulsa's Clifford Marsland by a 6-2, 6-4 count to set up an all-Texas final. Trailing 3-2, Hess-Olesen suffered a minor injury and retired, which gave Whitehead the victory. "Daniel came out on top, and he got better as the tournament went on," UT head coach Michael Center said. "He deserved to win. It was too bad that Soren hurt himself, but I give Daniel a lot of credit for his play this weekend. Soren had a great weekend, too. He showed this weekend that he is a tremendous player." Texas also added a pair of wins at the Olympia Fields Invitational near Chicago. David Holiner defeated Alabama's Carlos Taborga, 6-2, 6-2, and Ben Chen posted a 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 win over Illinois' Tim Kopinski. "We had some nice performances at Olympia Fields," Center said. "Alex Hilliard had a great weekend, and Jacoby Lewis was terrific. It was a good weekend for those guys." Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational
