Olympia Fields Country Club Invitational
CHICAGO – The University of Texas men’s tennis team combined for a 5-3 record in rounds two and three of singles competition during the second day of the Olympia Fields Country Club Invitational, hosted by the University of Illinois.
During round two of singles play, all four Longhorns in Chicago won their respective singles matches. Texas went 1-3 in round three of singles.
Senior Chris Camillone won two singles matches on Saturday to improve to 2-1 during the Invitational. Camillone defeated Illinois’ Alex Jesse in three sets (6-3, 1-6, 6-4) before topping Alex Lawson of Notre Dame in straight sets (6-3, 6-3).
Junior No. 99 David Holiner posted a straight set victory over Cal’s Campbell Johnson (6-4, 6-4) before falling to No. 24 Greg Andrews of Notre Dame (6-3, 6-1). Holiner is 2-1 during singles play this weekend at Olympia.
Senior Alex Hilliard also split matches on Saturday, first defeating Andrew Scholnick of Cal in straight sets (6-4, 6-2) before losing in three sets to Tim Kopinski of Illinois. Hilliard is 2-1 in singles this weekend.
Senior Ben Chen defeated Kopinksi in straight sets (6-3, 6-2) to begin the day and earn his first singles victory of the weekend. Chen followed in round three with a straight set loss to Chase Melton of Cal (6-5, 6-3).
The Olympia Fields Country Club Invitational concludes on Sunday with one doubles round and one singles round.
Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational
MIDLAND, Texas – Freshman Nick Naumann advanced to the semifinals of the Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational singles draw with two victories on Saturday.
Naumann defeated Sam Iftikhar (New Mexico) in the round of 16 and Francisco Zambon (Texas Tech) in the round of eight. The Woodlands, Texas native edged both of his opponents with 10-point tiebreakers to advance in his first competition as a Longhorn.
The sophomore doubles pairing of Jacoby Lewis and Joey Swaysland advanced to the quarterfinals before losing to Wichita State (Nicol/Gregurovic), 8-5, late Saturday night after a rain delay.
The 17-team Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational will conclude on Sunday.
