Kutrovsky advances in NCAA men's tennis singles draw
May 20, 2009 COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- Texas junior Dimitar Kutrovsky fought back from one set down to post a three-set victory over Mississippi’s 16th-ranked Jonas Berg Wednesday in the opening round of the 64-player singles draw at the 2009 NCAA Championships. Kutrovsky (Sofia, Bulgaria) rallied for a 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 win over Berg to earn a spot in Thursday’s singles round of 32, where he will take on Virginia’s Sanam Singh, a 6-3, 6-1 first-round winner over Rice’s Christoph Muller. Kutrovsky broke Berg’s serve to take a 4-3 lead in the third set, but Berg broke back to even the set at four. Berg held serve to take a 5-4 lead before Kutrovsky regained his serve and evened the set at five. Berg yielded his serve in the next game with a double fault to give Kutrovsky a 6-5 lead, and in the ensuing game, the UT junior watched Berg send a forehand wide on match point and claimed the three-set victory. Kutrovsky, who earned ITA singles All-America honors last season, can do the same this season with a victory Thursday over Virginia’s Singh. 2009 NCAA Championships
