No. 8 Men's Tennis falls to No. 13 Baylor, 4-3
April 6, 2011 AUSTIN, Texas - No. 8 Texas (15-6, 1-2 Big 12) collected singles victories from Ben Chen, Jean Andersen, and Daniel Whitehead but No. 13 Baylor (14-3, 3-0 Big 12) claimed a 4-3 victory over the Longhorns Wednesday evening at UT's Penick-Allison Tennis Center. At first doubles, Texas' Ed Corrie and Andersen held serve to open the match before the Bears' Roberto Maytin and John Peers broke the Horns and assumed a 2-1 lead. The two sides held serve throughout the match until Baylor, leading 7-5, broke the Horns' serve once more to take the match, 8-5. At second doubles, UT's Kellen Damico and Vasko Mladenov held a 6-3 lead over Baylor's Sergio Ramirez and Jordan Rux, but the Bears took the next five games to win the match, 8-6. The match at third doubles featuring UT's Chris Camillone and Whitehead against Baylor's Julian Bley and Kike Grangeiro progressed to a tiebreaker, where the Horns prevailed, 7-6 (4). Baylor pushed its lead to 2-0 when its 83rd-ranked Maytin posted a 6-1, 6-1 win over UT's Mladenov at fifth singles. Texas cut into the Baylor lead at fourth singles, where Chen dealt Baylor's 88th-ranked Grangeiro a 6-1, 6-2 defeat. The Horns would even the match with a win at third singles. UT's 90th-ranked Andersen took the first set off of Baylor's Rux at third singles, 6-1 before Rux claimed the second set, 6-2. Trailing 3-1 in the final set, Andersen broke Rux's serve, held serve and broke Rux once more to take a 4-3 lead. At 5-4, Andersen held serve to take the set, 6-4 and even the match at two. Baylor, however, would claim the next two decisions to take a 4-2 lead and clinch the victory. At first singles, UT's 59th-ranked Damico took the first set, 6-3, but Baylor's 18th-ranked Peers took the second set, 6-4. Peers went on to take the final set, 6-0 to extend the Baylor lead to 3-2. Moments later, Baylor's Ramirez finished off a 6-4, 6-2 win over UT's Corrie at second singles to clinch the Baylor win. UT's Whitehead finished off Baylor's 81st-ranked Dennis Lengsfeld by a 6-4, 6-3 count in the evening's last match to finish. Texas resumes Big 12 play on Sunday, April 10 when it hosts Texas Tech at 2:30 p.m. Central.
