No. 7 Men's Tennis knocks off Rice, 6-1

AUSTIN, Texas - No. 7 Texas (15-5) claimed the doubles point and won five of six singles matches in a 6-1 victory over Rice (13-6) Saturday afternoon at UT's Penick-Allison Tennis Center. The Horns took two of three doubles matches to secure the doubles point. Texas' sophomore tandem of Chris Camillone and Daniel Whitehead got off to a quick start against Rice's Jonathan Chang and Michael Nuesslein and raced out to an 8-3 win at the third doubles slot. Texas clinched the doubles point at first doubles, where UT's third-ranked tandem of Jean Andersen and Ed Corrie defeated Rice's Harry Fowler and Oscar Podlewski by an 8-4 count. Rice claimed the remaining match at second doubles. Texas' Whitehead pushed the UT lead to 2-0, as he dealt Andy Wang a 6-1, 6-2 defeat at sixth singles. Andersen extended the Texas cushion to 3-0, as he made short work of Sam Garforth-Bles and posted a 6-3, 6-2 win at third singles. Senior Kellen Damico, playing at No. 1 singles against the Owls, clinched the Texas victory when he defeated Rice's 97th-ranked Fowler, 6-2, 7-5. Corrie tacked on to the lead at second singles, as he knocked off Peter Frank by a 6-3, 6-3 count to stake Texas to a 5-0 lead. The Owls got on the board with a straight-set win at fourth singles, and UT's Vasko Mladenov closed out the Texas victory with a 7-5, 7-6 (3) win over Nuesslein at fifth singles.
Texas resumes conference play on Wednesday, April 6 when it hosts Baylor at UT's Penick-Allison Tennis Center. The first 50 fans to visit the Texas Athletics marketing table will receive a free polo shirt (adult sizes only). Free hot dogs will be available while supplies last.
