No. 7 USC defeats No. 3 Men's Tennis, 5-2

LOS ANGELES – No. 3 Texas (11-3) picked up the doubles point and a singles victory from sophomore Daniel Whitehead, but No. 7 USC (11-2) posted a 5-2 victory over the Longhorns Friday evening at USC’s Marks Tennis Stadium. Texas opened up a 1-0 lead on USC on the strength of doubles wins at the first and second slots. S UT senior Kellen Damico and freshman David Holiner notched their second win of the week at second doubles, as they posted an 8-4 win over the Trojans’ Jaak Poldma and J.T. Sundling. UT’s fourth-ranked tandem of senior Ed Corrie and junior Jean Andersen sealed the doubles point for the Longhorns when they tallied an 8-5 win over the Trojans’ Steve Johnson and Raymond Sarmiento at first doubles. USC’s Emilio Gomez and Daniel Nguyen edged UT’s Ben Chen and Whitehead in a tiebreak at third doubles. USC evened the match at one when the Trojans’ 19th-ranked Nguyen finished off UT’s Andersen by a 6-2, 6-2 count at third singles. The Trojans assumed a 2-1 lead when Gomez dealt Texas’ Chen a 6-3, 6-2 defeat at fifth singles. Texas evened the match at fourth singles when USC’s Sarmiento retired due to an injury. UT’s Whitehead took the first set off of Sarmiento, 7-5 and held a 2-0 second-set lead when the match was called. USC took a 3-2 lead after registering a victory at second singles, as the Trojans’ 44th-ranked Poldma defeated UT’s 88th-ranked Damico, 7-5, 6-2. USC’s Johnson clinched the victory at first singles with a 6-2, 6-3 defeat of Texas’ 29th-ranked Corrie. The Trojans finished off the victory with a win at sixth singles, where UT’s Holiner suffered a 7-5, 6-1 defeat to Michael Grant.
